Critical thinking is a 21st-century essential — here’s how to help you and your kids learn it

Summary

If we want people to thrive in our complicated world, we need to teach them how to think, says educator Brian Oshiro. And we can do it with 4 simple questions:

1. Go beyond “what?” — and ask “how?” and “why?

2. Follow it up with “How do you know this?

3. Prompt yourself to think about how others' perspectives may differ from your perspective.

4. Finally, ask yourself how to solve this problem. Answering the question will help you to synthezise your knowledge. Think of different solutions and test your assumptions about what you think you already know.
